Astrology can be further divided into two categories –

1. Mathematical astrology – This segment of astrology is mainly concerned with the preparation of the horoscope/birth chart. This is done with the help of information like place of birth, date and time of birth, planetary positions that are known at time of birth and plotted thereafter.

While Vedic astrology recognises Earth to be the centre point, the zodiac is a circular belt and all the planets revolve in this belt. Now, this is divided into 27 equal parts and each part is known to be a constellation (nakshatra). On the other hand, when zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts, each comes to be known as zodiac sign. Each zodiac sign forms 30° of the total 360° of the zodiac.

There are 12 houses and 12 zodiac signs in the birth chart, namely:

1. Aries
2. Taurus
3. Gemini
4. Cancer
5. Leo
6. Virgo
7. Libra
8. Scorpio
9. Sagittarius
10. Capricorn
11. Aquarius
12. Pisces

Each of these 12 zodiac signs have a respective lord planet. While Sun and Moon are the lord planets of one zodiac, other planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are the lord planets of two zodiac signs each. While these 7 planets are physical planets, Rahu and Ketu are known to be shadow planets. Shadow planets are not lord planets to any zodiac sign.
